Halle 180 – history and inauguration |
On 11 November 1991 the School of Architecture of the ZHW (Zurich University
of Applied Sciences Winterthur) opened its doors for study in Halle 180.
In the record time of only a year the former Kesselschmiede (boiler foundry)
of the famous Sulzer Brothers’ engineering company had been converted
into a huge learning space. Now this open plan hall, with a personal workplace
for each student, has been in operation for more than 10 years. We are
firmly convinced that the effort has been worth it.
Halle 180 fulfils almost all of students’ and lecturers’
high expectations. Everyone is enthusiastic about the open atmosphere,
which promotes contact between students in different classes and years
of study. Outside lesson times, students used to study mainly at home,
but today they can be found working in the building at almost any time
of day and night.
