Mechatronics - the new specialization in the Electrical Engineering degree programme
Outline of the profession
Mechatronics was born out of the close connection between the classical
engineering disciplines of mechanics, electrical engineering, systems
engineering and information technology. These disciplines are decisive
throughout the product development and manufacturing process.
The application of mechatronics promotes innovative products with a greater range of functions and improved performance, which were previously unattainable technologically.
Examples of mechatronic products are: sensor controlled robots, highly developed machines for manufacturing, mobile robots or driver assistance systems in cars.
Typical fields of activity of mechatronic engineers are:
- The development of mechatronic products and systems
- Modelling and simulation of mechanical and electronic systems
- Development of software for technical appliances and components
- Commissioning, operation and maintenance of technical systems
- Project leadership
- Consultancy activities in industrial and service firms
- Sales and training
Mechatronic engineers are experts in the technical implementation of products from the prototype stage through their introduction into the production run, right up to full inclusion in the mass production process.
They are distinguished by their excellent understanding of the connections between different disciplines and their ability to grasp situations quickly, which means that they learn the ropes efficiently in new areas of technology. They can therefore implement complex solutions successfully in cooperation with many partners, such as clients, employees, supervisors and specialists.
