What is Erasmus
Erasmus is the European universities' student exchange programme,
created by the European Union.
The aim of Erasmus/Socrates is to promote student mobility. Although
Switzerland is not a member of the EU, Swiss universities were
originally able to participate in the Erasmus programme, thanks
to a bilateral
agreement with the EU.
This bilateral agreement expired in 1995 and was not renewed
for the follow-up programme, Socrates. Nevertheless, the financial
support of the Swiss government (which provides grants for both
Swiss students
and guest students from abroad), as well as carefully maintained
contacts with our partner institutions, allow us to continue
with
this exchange programme.
